LIFE TABLES FOR ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER AUSTRALIANS

The proposed release of the Information Paper: Calculating Experimental Life Tables for Use in Population Estimates and Projections of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, 2001 to 2006 (cat. no. 3106.0.55.003) scheduled for 29 October 2008 has been cancelled.

Alternatively, the Discussion Paper: Assessment of Methods for Developing Life Tables for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, 2006 (cat. no. 3302.0.55.002) was released on 17 November 2008 in conjunction with the Information Paper: Census Data Enhancement - Indigenous Mortality Quality Study, 2006-07 (cat. no. 4723.0).

The Discussion Paper presents an assessment of various methods for adjusting incomplete Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (Indigenous) death registration data for use with the latest available estimates of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population so as to compile Indigenous life tables and life expectancy estimates. The paper describes the methods considered and the results of the analysis (including the resulting life expectancy estimates). It also describes the limitations including sensitivity analysis of the various methods. An ABS preferred approach is presented, although given the limitations of the available data, the estimates will continue to be considered experimental. The purpose of the discussion paper is to provide an opportunity for stakeholders to provide feedback on the topic to ensure all issues are adequately considered before finalising the experimental Indigenous life tables and life expectancy estimates in early 2009.

Further, experimental life tables and life expectancy estimates for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians for 2001-2006 were not included in Deaths, Australia, 2007 (cat. no. 3302.0) released on 25 November 2008.
