RETAIL TRADE

The January 2009 seasonally adjusted estimate for South Australia's retail turnover was $1,364.4m, while the estimate for Australia was $19,208.5m. South Australia's contribution to total retail turnover in Australia from December 2008 to January 2009 remained steady at 7.1%.

From December 2008, the increase in retail turnover for South Australia across all retail industries was 0.1%, while turnover for Australia grew by 0.2%.

Comparing January 2009 with January 2008, the South Australian industry groups with the largest percentage increases in retail turnover (in seasonally adjusted terms) were Clothing and soft good retailing, which rose by 11.2% to $72.6m, Food retailing, which rose by 10.3% to $598.1m, and Household good retailing, which rose by 9.8% to $238.2m.

The only South Australian industry group to report a decrease in retail turnover was Other retailing, which decreased by 3.3% to $180.0m.

NEW MOTOR VEHICLE SALES

In February 2009, 2,862 new passenger vehicles and 4,649 new vehicles in total (in trend terms) were sold in South Australia. The trend estimate for total new vehicle sales in South Australia has continually decreased since February 2008.

In Australia, 44,490 new passenger vehicles and 74,254 new vehicles in total (in trend terms) were sold in February 2009. The trend estimate for total new vehicle sales in Australia has continually decreased since January 2008.
