In 2010, 97,437 females (80.4% of all females) and 95,351 males (78.7% of all males) had not been married previously. The number of females and males marrying for the first time has been gradually increasing since 2006, and the 2010 figures are a continuation of this trend.

Of the 121,176 marriages registered in 2010, for 71.2% of marriages both parties had never previously been married. A further 16.6% of marriages were first marriages for one partner.

In 2010, 21,873 females (18.1% of all females) and 24,063 males (19.9% of all males) registered for marriage had been previously divorced. These proportions are 0.4 and 0.5 percentage points lower for females and males respectively compared to 2009.

In 2010, 1,866 females (1.5% of all females) and 1,762 males (1.5% of all males) registered for marriage had been previously widowed. This represents a decrease of 0.2 percentage points for females, and an unchanged proportion for males since 2009. From 1990, the number of widows and widowers remarrying has decreased overall.
