RELEASE OF POPULATION BY AGE AND SEX, REGIONS OF AUSTRALIA, 2008 (CAT. NO. 3235.0)

The annual publication Population by age and sex, regions of Australia, 2008 (cat. no. 3235.0) was released on 11 August 2009. This product contains preliminary estimates of the resident population by sex and five-year age groups at 30 June 2008. For the first time, it also facilitates comparisons over time by including data for 30 June 2003, converted to 2008 ASGC boundaries. Data is provided for Local Government Areas (LGAs), Statistical Local Areas (SLAs), Statistical Divisions (SDs), Statistical Subdivisions and states and territories of Australia, as defined in the 2008 edition of the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) (cat. no. 1216.0).

The product provides a national overview of regional trends in the age and sex distribution of Australia's population, covering topics such as median age, children aged under 15 years, the working age population (aged 15-64 years), people aged 65 years and above and sex ratios (the number of males per 100 females). These topics are explored in greater detail in separate commentaries for each state and territory. Commentaries also provide visual representation of the data with the inclusion of population pyramid graphs and colour maps.

Preliminary estimates of total resident populations for 30 June 2009 are intended to be released on 30 March 2010 in Regional Population Growth, Australia, 2008-09 (cat. no. 3218.0).
