IMPRISONMENT RATES

At 30 June 2014:

    • The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander imprisonment rate increased to 2,174.5 prisoners per 100,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population, from 2,040.3 prisoners per 100,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population at 30 June 2013. This is the highest Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander imprisonment rate since 2004. (Table 19)

    • The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander imprisonment rate increased across all states and territories from 30 June 2013, with the exceptions of Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander imprisonment rate was highest in Western Australia (3,663.5 prisoners per 100,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adult population), followed by the Northern Territory (2,808.0 prisoners per 100,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adult population). (Table 19)

    • The age standardised imprisonment rate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons was 13 times greater than the age standardised imprisonment rate for non-Indigenous persons (1,857.2 prisoners per 100,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population compared to 144.0 prisoners per 100,000 non-Indigenous population).
