HIGH CENSUS NIGHT RATIOS, WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Almost a third (15 of 46) of the high Census Night ratio LGAs were in Western Australia, extending throughout the north of the state. These LGAs had a large proportion of mining workers (23%) in their Census Night populations, in comparison to the proportion found in Western Australian (6%) and all other states and territories (1%).

In 2011, Wyndham-East Kimberly showed a very interesting range of characteristics in its Census Night population. It appeared to attract a large number of people of both sexes and most age ranges. This was unlike many of the other high Census Night ratio LGAs, that had visitors of both sexes, most of whom were over 50 years (e.g., Exmouth), or mainly had male visitors between 20 and 49 years (e.g., Yilgarn).
