MILK CATTLE The total number of milk cattle in Australia in 2010 was 2.5 million, only 100 thousand head above the historical low of 2.4 million set in 1991. Across most Australian states a similar pattern of change can be seen with the exception of Victoria and Tasmania. In Victoria, total milk cattle numbers peaked at 2 million in 2001 with the lowest number recorded in 1992 at 1.4 million. In Tasmania, total milk cattle numbers peaked at 241 thousand in 1967 with the lowest number recorded in 1990 at 134 thousand.
