BARLEY Total national barley production in 2010 was 7.9 million tonnes, down 24% on an historical high of 10.4 million tonnes recorded in 2004. The area of land under cultivation for barley has also decreased in 2010 to 4.4 million hectares from a high of 5 million hectares in 2009. A similar pattern to the Australian totals is seen across all states with the exception of Queensland. In Queensland barley production peaked in 1986 at 810 thousand tonnes and then fell to 113 thousand tonnes in 2010. During this period the land area under cultivation fell from a high of 343 thousand tonnes in 1986 to 69 thousand hectares in 2010 .
