OVERVIEW OF THE NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS REVIEW (NASR)

The National Agricultural Statistics Review (NASR) is a joint project between the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES).

The NASR was initiated by ABS and ABARES to build upon outcomes of recent internal program reviews by the agencies and national statistical work conducted by the ABS, in particular the Essential Statistical Assets for Australia. It will be considering all aspects of the Australian agricultural statistical information system and the system’s ability to inform decision making. It seeks to identify opportunities to improve the system and develop a framework for ongoing assessment, coordination and governance of information needs into the future.

The Review will identify:

  • the priority information needs of stakeholders
  • where information needs are not being met by existing sources of data
  • overlaps and inconsistencies in data, and
  • opportunities for efficiency in the national agricultural statistical information system

The Review considers agricultural statistics to broadly mean the data, information, statistics or other knowledge that can be used to provide insights into agricultural activity (including fisheries and forestry activity), these may include:
  • ABS censuses and surveys
  • ABARES farm, fisheries and forestry surveys
  • commissioned research
  • reports containing information, data or statistics
  • administrative data
  • datasets residing in any agency's databases
  • data and statistics

The approach will be:
  • to verify the enduring national goals for Australian agriculture (See - The National Agricultural Statistical Information System)
  • to conduct stakeholder analysis to determine the users, producers and custodians of existing agricultural statistical information
  • engaging and consulting with stakeholders across government, industry, community and academia
  • publication of a recommendations report
  • to use the information and relationships developed from stakeholder engagement to shape an efficient and sustainable national agricultural statistical information system
