NUTRITION

The 2012-13 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey (NATSINPAS) is the first national Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nutrition survey of adults and children (aged 2 years and over). The NATSINPAS nutrition component collected similar information to the nutrition component of the 2011-12 National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey (NNPAS); however, aspects of enumeration differed between the two surveys. These enumeration differences are:

  • Remote areas did not receive a follow up phone interview; as a result there is a single day of data for respondents from this locality.
  • The food model booklet presented to the respondents during the person interview was different to the NNPAS food model booklet (available in the Downloads section).
  • There was a bush tucker prompt card presented to respondents living in remote areas during the person interview to complement the food model booklet (available in the Downloads section).

Analysis of the 2012-13 NATSINPAS suggests that, like in other nutrition surveys, there has been some under-reporting of food intake by participants in this survey. Given the association of under-reporting with overweight/obesity and consciousness of socially acceptable/desirable dietary patterns, under-reporting is unlikely to affect all foods and nutrients equally. For more information on under-reporting in this survey, see Under-reporting in Nutrition Surveys in this Users’ Guide.

For information about the nutrition component please refer to the Nutrition section of the AHS Users’ Guide which contains the following subsections:

24-hour Dietary Recall

Interpretation of Results

Please note that where the 2011-12 NNPAS is referred to in the Nutrition section of the AHS Users’ Guide, the same applies to the 2012-13 NATSINPAS.
