ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION

This publication presents results from the ABS Waste Management, Transport and Motor Vehicle Usage Survey conducted in March 2012. The Survey collected a range of information on people's views and practices in relation to three areas which may have an impact on the environment. Firstly, the Survey collected information on the way households recycle and reuse household items, and how they dispose of items that contain potentially hazardous substances. Secondly, the Survey gathered data on people's travel preferences and patterns, such as the distances they usually travel to work or full-time study, their forms of transport and, specifically, their use of public transport. Lastly, the survey collected data on household motor vehicles including the factors considered when purchasing a motor vehicle and the type of fuel used.

Tables of data estimates and their corresponding relative standard errors are presented in Data Cubes (spreadsheet format) in the Downloads tab.

DATA COMPARABILITY

Data on waste management, transport and motor vehicle usage is collected every three years. Previous data were collected and published in 2009, 2006, 2003, 2000 and 1996. Where appropriate, 2009 and 2006 data have been included in this publication to enable comparisons over time. When comparing 2012 with 2009 and 2006 estimates, users should be aware that some differences in the data may be due to a change in survey content or a change in collection methodology. See paragraph 18 of the Explanatory Notes for further information.

For the first time, the Waste Management, Transport and Motor Vehicle Usage Survey has included households residing in very remote areas of Australia. The inclusion has minimal impact on Australian level estimates. See paragraph 5 of the Explanatory Notes for further information.

ROUNDING

As estimates have been rounded, discrepancies may occur between sums of the component items and totals. Published proportions are calculated prior to rounding the estimates and therefore some discrepancy may occur between these proportions and those that are calculated from the rounded estimates.
