CHANGES IN THE PRISONER POPULATION

Between the 2012 and 2013 Prisoner Census:
  • the prisoner population increased in all states and territories, except Western Australia and Tasmania
  • the largest increase in prisoner numbers were in Queensland (483), Victoria (456) and New South Wales (252)
  • the highest proportional increases in prisoner numbers were for Australia Capital Territory (13%), Queensland, Victoria, and South Australia (all 9%)
  • the prisoner population decreased by 2% in Tasmania and 1% in Western Australia. (Table 15)
