Welcome

Welcome to the latest edition of the Education and Training Newsletter.

A number of articles using Education and Training statistics have recently been released. An Australian Social Trends article, 'Hitting the books: Characteristics of higher education students', looks at those who were enrolled at a higher education institution, focusing on the different characteristics of younger students and older students. It looks at their living and working arrangements, their income, and their health.

An article in Reflecting a Nation: Stories from the 2011 Census looks at 'Year 12 Achievement and Continuing Education'. It focuses on 20 to 24 year olds, their levels of educational attainment and the characteristics of those in further study.

A recent article in the Perspectives on Regional Australia series on 'Non-school Qualifications in Regions' looks at rates of those who have attained Certificate III or above and how these vary across Australia.

Work continues on exploring the potential for data integration to answer key policy questions. A number of pieces of work will be released in the coming weeks and months, including a paper on the potential for linked enrolments and Census data to report on destinations of Year 12 students a year out from study, and a paper exploring the possible linkage of Census data and vocational education in schools data. We are also deep in negotiations with a range of stakeholders about further data integration that would allow us to better understand factors impacting on school performance and other outcomes.
