ELECTRONIC LODGEMENTS WITH GOVERNMENT ORGANISATIONS

During the year ended 30 June 2008, 68% of businesses undertook some form of electronic lodgements with government organisations via the Internet or web. Electronic lodgement of payments was the most common type of electronic lodgement activity during the year ended 30 June 2008, with 55% of businesses which use the Internet making payments this way.

(a) Proportions are of all businesses which used the Internet or web in each employment size category.
(b) Businesses could identify more than one lodgement.
(c) Government organisations include those at Federal, State/territory or Local levels.
(d) Excludes electronic lodgement of taxation forms undertaken on behalf of the business by accountants or tax agents.


For three of the five response options, the proportion of businesses reporting electronic lodgements increases through successive employment size ranges. For example, 35% of businesses with 0-4 persons employed reported lodgement of taxation forms over the Internet or web, compared with 83% of businesses with 200 or more persons employed.

Across all industries, payments were the most common type of electronic lodgement with government organisations, particularly by businesses in Professional, scientific and technical services (65%). Businesses in Mining were the most likely to lodge taxation forms over the Internet or web (53%). Health care and social assistance recorded the highest proportion of businesses which lodged claims for grants or benefits (20%), more than twice the proportion of the next highest industry, Transport, postal and warehousing (8%).
