STRUCTURE AND CONTENT OF DIRECTORY ENTRIES

OVERVIEW

This directory contains a set of metadata about each source of FDV data. Metadata is information about a data collection, and does not include data itself. Metadata is useful as it can provide readers with:

• information about what data already exists and where data gaps are, both within and across data sources;
• an understanding of the range of FDV data captured by each data source;
• a summary of the collection methodology and consequent limitations of the data for each data source to enable readers to make an assessment of whether the data source may be suitable for their needs;
• contact details for accessing published data and, where applicable, further customised data;
• information about the methodology, data items and context for existing collections which can be used as a model for the development of a new data collection. Contacting source agencies can provide useful insights about the data collection development process for similar types of data sources.

The directory contains a separate page entry for each data source. Under the 'Name of Collection', each directory entry is divided into two components; key metadata and detailed metadata and contains the following sections:

DASHBOARD METADATA

Each entry includes a 'dashboard' style snapshot of key aspects of the data source to assist readers to make an initial assessment as to whether the data source is likely to be useful for their purposes. Readers who make an initial assessment that a data source may be useful can then refer to the detailed metadata, which provides more substantial information about the data source, including contact information.

The three dashboard indicators of possible usefulness are geographic coverage, collection frequency and data availability. These were selected as metadata most likely to rule a data source out of use for any given purpose.

DETAILED METADATA

Each data source entry contains detailed information about the data source's content, history and collection processes to enable readers to assess the suitability of using data from this source to meet their research needs. Information is provided about the purpose and type of collection, the collection methodology, FDV-related data items that are available as outputs and hyperlinks to publications and data custodian's contact details.
