RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE DISABILITY MODULE AND SDAC

1. The Survey of Disability, Ageing and Carers (SDAC) has two separate parts: a household component and a cared-accommodation component. This appendix refers to the household component, which is a specifically targeted computer-assisted interviewer-based questionnaire. As such it has the capacity to ascertain details which are outside the scope of the Disability Module. Apart from the much broader and more detailed scope of SDAC there are two key differences between the Disability Module and SDAC.

2. The first of these is in the purpose of the two collections. The standard Disability Module is designed to obtain data on the broad characteristics of the disability population in the particular survey in which the module is included; it first establishes the presence of effects of any long-term health conditions, limitations or restrictions, and then ascertains the extent to which these require the person to be assisted to carry out various core activities. The SDAC, however, produces detailed disability data and national prevalence estimates; unlike the Disability Module it seeks information on the actual nature and causes of the disabilities and restrictions with which it is concerned.

3. The second of these is a consequence of the varying levels of detail. The Disability Module uses prompt cards to ensure that respondents who answer questions on conditions lasting six months or more are aware of all the types of conditions and restrictions which are intended to be covered by the module, but does not seek information about which of these conditions or restrictions are specifically present. The SDAC, as mentioned, does however seek such information. The lists of conditions and restrictions found on the Disability Module prompt cards are derived from the sequence of questions in SDAC which also ascertain causes for those conditions and restrictions.

4. Consequently, the following table does not provide exact links between the Disability Module and SDAC.
