Effective statistical infrastructure is necessary to ensure the overall quality and accessibility of Australia’s official statistics. However, the significant investment required to maintain statistical infrastructure assets is often unrecognised and/or undervalued.
The objective of the ESI consultation was to understand the main statistical infrastructure opportunities and barriers underpinning the production and use of official statistics with a view to informing strategic initiatives (including the ABS transformation program) around modernising Australia’s statistical system.
Essential Statistical infrastructure includes several important components of Australia’s statistical system including:
- procedures that enable statistical production activities,
- conceptual standards, official classification structures, and various registers that are used in statistical production activities,
- foundational assets of legislation, policies and governance that provide structure and organisation to the statistical system’s environment,
- software applications that enable or support statistical production activities, and
- skills and culture.
