ACTIVE STEPS TO FIND WORK

Active steps to find work includes: writing, telephoning or applying in person to an employer for work; answering an advertisement for a job; checking factory notice boards or the touch screens at the Centrelink offices; being registered with Centrelink as a job seeker; checking or registering with any other employment agency; advertising or tendering for work; and contacting friends or relatives.

The data item 'active steps to find work' is not directly referenced in LFS standard products; however, it is used to derive a person's status in the labour force. More information can be found in the Labour Statistics: Concepts, Sources and Methods (cat. no. 6102.0.55.001).

AGGREGATE MONTHLY HOURS WORKED

Aggregate monthly hours worked measures the total number of actual hours worked by employed persons in a calendar month. It differs from the actual hours worked estimates (and the usual hours worked estimates) since these refer only to the hours worked in the reference week. For details see Information Paper: Expansion of Hours Worked Estimates from the Labour Force Survey, 2009 (cat. no. 6290.0.55.001).

Actual and usual hours worked cannot be aggregated across time to produce either quarterly or annual estimates as they relate to only a single week in the month. In contrast, aggregate monthly hours worked estimates are a monthly measure, and can be aggregated across time to produce both quarterly and annual estimates.

AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND STANDARD CLASSIFICATION OF OCCUPATIONS (ANZSCO)

The Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) (cat. no. 1220.0), is a skill-based classification used to classify all occupations and jobs in the Australian and New Zealand labour markets. In February 2009 ANZSCO replaced the Australian Standard Classification of Occupations (ASCO) in Labour Force Survey outputs.

ANZSCO defines a job as a set of tasks designed to be performed by one person for an employer (including self-employment) in return for payment or profit. Individual persons are classified by occupation through their relationship to a past, present or future job; and an occupation is defined as a set of jobs that require the performance of similar or identical sets of tasks.

Standard output for occupation data is at the 1, 2, 3, or 4 digit level of ANZSCO.

AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND STANDARD INDUSTRIAL CLASSIFICATION (ANZSIC)

The Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) (cat. no. 1292.0) is used to classify responses to questions on industry. In February 2009 the 1993 ANZSIC classification was superseded by the 2006 ANZSIC (ANZSIC06) classification in Labour Force Survey outputs.

The ANZSIC06 is a hierarchical classification comprising four levels, namely Divisions (the highest level of the classification), Subdivisions, Groups and Classes (the lowest level of the classification). The nineteen Divisions (identified by an alphabetic character) provide a broad overall picture of the economy whilst the Subdivision, Group and Class levels provide increasingly detailed dissections.

Standard output for industry data is at the 1, 2, or 3 digit level of ANZSIC06.
