Meat cattle are found in all parts of Tasmania; the highest concentrations are in the north west (King Island and Circular Head) and in the north east (Dorset municipality). Smaller herds are found throughout the Central Highlands and Northern Midlands municipalities.

Tasmania's meat cattle herd decreased by 80,000 head (down 16%) in the year ending 30 June 2000; reduction in stock numbers mainly resulted from a continued period of drought.

Although meat cattle numbers increased in the mid-1990s, they have not returned to the numbers reached in the peak periods of the late 1970s.
