NOTES

INTRODUCTION

This publication presents results from the quarterly Survey of Tourist Accommodation (STA). The scope of the regular survey is hotels, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms.

For the four quarters of 2003 the scope of the STA has been expanded from the regular inclusions of hotels, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms, to include:
  • holiday flats, units and houses operated by owners, managers or real estate agents who have sole letting rights to at least 15 flats, units or houses for short term letting
  • caravan parks with 40 or more powered sites or cabins
  • visitor hostels with 25 or more bed spaces.

THIS ISSUE

Results from hotels, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments are included in this publication. Originally, results from holiday flats, units and houses, caravan parks and visitor hostels were to be included in this publication, however the need to assure the quality of data from a large number of new respondents has delayed the availability of these results. These will now be released on 25 July 2003 on the ABS web site (and will be available free of charge).

FUTURE ISSUES

Summary trend and seasonally adjusted data will be included in future publications, commencing with the June quarter 2003 issue.

DATA QUALITY IMPROVEMENTS

The ABS has established improved procedures for frame maintenance. These procedures have identified a number of hotels, motels, guest houses and serviced apartments which have been operating for a number of quarters but are not currently on the STA frame. These additional establishments will be included in the STA from the June quarter 2003. Historical data will be revised to include these establishments.
