16 The ANZSPC provides a framework for the grouping of all goods and services produced in the Australian and New Zealand economies. In so doing, it aids the:

  • comparability between production, import and export statistics
  • links between products and the industries that produce them
  • comparability between Australian, New Zealand and international statistics
  • the compilation of product data for National Accounts; and
  • construction of alternate views based on product rather than industry

17 Like the CPC2, the ANZSPC presents product categories for goods and services within a complete classification. While expecting that it would occur infrequently, Australia and New Zealand agreed that each country would be able to create items below the Subclass (five digit) level to meet national statistical requirements in presenting both current collection items and providing the basis for definition of future collection items. This approach is aimed at ensuring that the classification will accommodate future statistical requirements as well as those identified at the release of the classification.
