In the southern areas of the state, sheep farming is usually carried out in conjunction with grain growing. In the northern areas however, sheep are generally grazed on large specialist 'sheep stations'.

At 30 June 2005, the Western Australian sheep and lamb flock stood at 25.6 million.

At 30 June 2005, the majority of all sheep and lambs were found in the Midlands, Lower Great Southern and Upper Great Southern Statistical Divisions.
