South Australia is a major grain grower, accounting for more barley production than any other state. It is also responsible for the most vineyard area and production of any state. Apple growing is the principal non-citrus fruit industry of South Australia and is concentrated in the Adelaide Hills. Pastoral activities, particularly sheep grazing, are widespread in South Australia under varying climatic conditions from the arid saltbush plains in the far north through to the lush, well-watered pastures of the south east.

  • The main broadacre crops grown are wheat and barley.
  • The main livestock raised are sheep for meat and fine wool, and cattle for beef production.
  • The grape industry is South Australia's main fruit crop; other crops such as oranges and apples are also significant.
  • The main vegetable crops grown include potatoes, onions and carrots.
