The Age Pension seeks to ensure that people who have reached retirement age have an adequate level of income. Subject to income and assets tests, men aged 65 years and over are eligible for the Age Pension. For women, it depends on their date of birth. From 1 July 1995, the minimum age of 60 years for women to receive the Age Pension began to increase. By 2013, the minimum qualifying age for women will be 65 years, making it the same as for men.
On 1 July 1998, a pension bonus scheme was introduced. People who qualify for an Age Pension but delay their retirement and keep working can receive a lump sum bonus payment when they stop working and take up their pension entitlement.
At 1 June 2001 the local government area of Break O'Day had the highest rate of Age Pensioners in the state, with 134.9 recipients per 1,000 persons. Brighton local government area had 63.6 Age Pensioners per 1,000 persons, the lowest rate in the state.
