The Dietary Guidelines for Australians (NHMRC, 1992) recommend:

  • eating a wide variety of nutritious foods
  • eating plenty of breads and cereals (preferably wholegrain), vegetables (including legumes) and fruits
  • eating a diet low in fat (particularly saturated fat)
  • limiting alcohol intake
  • eating only a moderate amount of sugars and foods containing added sugars
  • choosing low salt foods and using salt sparingly
  • eating foods containing calcium (particularly important for females)
  • eating foods containing iron (particularly important to females, vegetarians and athletes)
  • maintaining a healthy body weight by balancing food intake with physical activity.
