The estimate of retail turnover for Tasmania for 2003-04 was $4,095.8 million, accounting for 2.1% of the Australian total. This figure was 13.0% above the 2002-03 total of $3,625.8 million. Food retailing was the largest contributor to the Tasmanian total, accounting for 40.2% of retail turnover in 2003-04. The sector showing the largest rate of growth was recreational good retailing with a 25.1% increase from $186.3m to $233.0m.

(a) Changes to this series were implemented in July 2004 with the introduction of a new sample design and an improved estimation method. These changes have caused revisions to the historical level estimates but the effects of the changes on movements should be minimal.
