Tasmania has an extensive transport network, and the cost of building and maintaining this infrastructure is very high.
LENGTH OF THE ROAD SYSTEM At 30 June 2003, there were 24,253 kilometres of roads open to general traffic, of which 13,129 kilometres were gravel, crushed stone or other improved surface; 10,485 kilometres were bitumen or concrete; and 639 kilometres were formed road.
