The survey is conducted in both urban and rural areas in all States and Territories, but excludes children living in certain remote and sparsely settled parts of Australia. The exclusion of these children only has a minor impact on any aggregate estimates that are produced for individual States and Territories, with the exception of the Northern Territory. METHOD OF COLLECTION Supplementary survey to the Labour Force Survey. This information is obtained from any responsible adult in the household who is asked to respond on behalf of the children in the household by trained interviewers. TIMING OF COLLECTION Reference Period Twelve months ending April. Frequency of Collection It is planned that the next survey will be collected as a supplement to the 2006 Labour Force Survey. Historical Data Two minor changes were made to the survey's content between 2000 and 2003.
Prior to 2000, data on children's participation in organised sporting activities was collected in 1996-97 and 1997-98 using the Population Survey Monitor. Data on access to and use of computers and the internet by people aged 5 years and over were collected on the Population Survey Monitor between 1998 and 2000. Data from this survey can be found in the feature article on 'Frequent home computer users aged 5 years and over' in the 1998 issue of Household Use of Information Technology, Australia (Cat. no. 8146.0).
