Attention Chiefs of Staff, Economics, Environment and Agriculture Desks ABS National Water Account Report will be released Wednesday The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) will release Water Account for Australia, 1993-94 to 1996-97 (cat. no. 4610.0) on Wednesday May 3. The report is the first update of Australian water usage figures since 1985 and is expected to play a key role in managing this most crucial and controversial of Australian resources. The report is part of a series of physical environmental accounts that are being developed in relation to Agenda 21 agreements made at the United Nations Conference for Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. The water account focuses on the physical characteristics of Australia's water resources. Where available, quantitative data are compiled on a national and State level. Detailed statistics on the volume of surface and groundwater assets (stocks), the supply and use of water by various industries and sectors, water re-use and discharge data are presented. Monetary data linked to the use of water resources are supplied. The report includes a compilation of water supply and use sustainability indicators.
