Males outnumber females in all Northern Territory regions

Males outnumbered females in all regions of the Northern Territory (NT) at 30 June 2002, according to the latest figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

With 112 males for every 100 females, Darwin/Environs (comprising Darwin City, Palmerston - East Arm, Litchfield and Finniss) had the highest proportion of males. The Central Region (comprising Alice Springs, Petermann, Sandover Balance and Tanami) had the lowest, with 105 males for every 100 females.

The region with the highest proportion of Indigenous people was Darwin Region Balance (78% of the region's population) at 30 June 2001. This area comprises Bathurst-Melville, Jabiru, South Alligator, Daly and West Arnhem. The Darwin/Environs area had the lowest proportion (11%).

The East Arnhem region recorded both the highest average taxable income ($47,081) and highest average net tax paid by individual taxpayers ($11,438) in 2000–01. The Katherine Region had the lowest average taxable income ($35,820) and Barkly Region had the lowest average net tax paid ($7,247).

At June 2002 the Darwin Region Balance had the highest rate of people receiving the Newstart Allowance (171 per 1,000 population), Parenting Payment Single (39 per 1,000 population) and Youth Allowance (38 per 1,000 population), while the Central Region had the highest rate of people receiving the Age Pension (32 per 1,000 population).

In 2003, Darwin/Environs had the highest proportion of traffic infringement notices issued for exceeding the speed limit (86% of all notices issued in that region). The Central Region had the highest proportion of notices issued for failing to comply with seatbelt laws (19%).

Diabetes accounted for about 8% of all deaths in the East Arnhem, Katherine, Barkly and Central Regions in 2002. This was more than double the proportion of deaths due to diabetes in the Darwin/Environs area (3%) and the Darwin Region Balance (3%).

The NT ABS Regional Director, Robyn Elliott said, "The latest edition of Regional Statistics, Northern Territory, 2004 gives the reader a comprehensive, but easily accessible overview of the Northern Territory and its regions".
