Increase in persons serving custodial and community-based corrections orders

Prisoner numbers in Australia increased by six per cent (1,915 persons) from the June quarter 2014, with males increasing by six per cent (1,734 persons) and females by seven per cent (181 persons), according to a release today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The Corrective Services Australia quarterly publication contains national, and state and territory information on persons in adult custody and community-based corrections in Australia.

"Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoner numbers also increased (up 535 persons or 6 per cent), and accounted for 28 per cent of the overall prisoner population. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander imprisonment rate was 12 times higher than the overall imprisonment rate in the June quarter 2015," said Ms Lisette Aarons from the ABS.

"Similarly, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander male prisoner numbers increased by five per cent (453 persons), while Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander female prisoner numbers increased by nine per cent (81 persons) between the June quarter 2014 and the June quarter 2015."

"The number of persons serving community-based corrections orders also increased, rising by four per cent (2,072 orders) from the March quarter 2015 - the largest quarterly increase since 2012," said Ms Aarons.

"There were increases in the number of persons serving sentenced probation (1,125 persons), community service orders (365 persons), restricted movement orders (322 persons) and parole (236 persons) since the June quarter 2014."
