The trend estimate for new motor vehicle sales increased by 0.7% in January 2003 compared with December 2002. Passenger vehicle sales increased by 0.8% over the same period and other vehicle sales increased by 0.7%.
The Northern Territory recorded the largest increase in sales of any state or territory (2.2%) in January 2003 compared with December 2002. Queensland was the only state or territory to record a decrease in sales (0.5%) over the same period.

Other vehicle sales increased by 35.2% and passenger vehicle sales increased by 18.4% from December 2002 to January 2003. Unusually low December 2002 sales and unusually high January 2003 sales caused the large movements in this series.
