This topic presents the latest data from the 2008 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Survey (NATSISS) on community facilities and services available locally (i.e. in the local suburb, town or community) to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households when needed.
Nationally, the majority of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households could locally access a range of medical and hospital services when needed (table 1.1). While the availability of Aboriginal health care services was similar across remoteness areas (62% of households nationally could access these services locally), other medical services were less likely to be locally available when needed in remote areas. These included hospitals (63% of households in remote areas compared with 74% of households nationally), other health/medical clinics (69% in remote areas compared with 82% nationally) and pharmacies/chemists (50% in remote areas compared with 84% nationally).
For most other community facilities, there were similar levels of availability across remoteness areas (table 1.1). Services and facilities that were less likely to be locally available when needed included:
