"Injuries are the principal cause of death in almost half of the people under 45 years of age and account for a range of physical, cognitive and psychological disabilities that seriously affect the quality of life of injured people and their families. Using ABS multiple cause of death data for registration years 1998 to 2002, this publication presents an overview of deaths from external causes of injury in Australia. The publication will investigate injuries experienced by special populations at risk from injury. Numbers of deaths and death rates for selected external causes for special populations at risk will be presented. Differentials in injury death rates by remoteness categories as well as by State and Territory will be presented. As well, the nature of injury for selected external causes will be examined.
