Purpose

To collect comprehensive energy consumption and production data to support medium-term projections of the energy sector, and supplement ABARE's detailed energy database.

Description

The Census of Electricity and Gas Operations collects data from management units and establishments for which the predominant activity is the generation, transmission or distribution of electricity (ANZSIC 3610); and the manufacture of town gas from coal and/or petroleum or the mains distribution of town gas, natural gas or liquefied petroleum (ANZSIC 3620).

Each management unit or establishment is classified to the single industry from which it derives its main income, irrespective of any diversity of activities undertaken. This means that a unit which derives most of its income from electricity generation activities would have all operations included in the aggregates for the electricity industry group, even if significant secondary activities (e.g. water supply) were undertaken. For example, the electricity data collected for the ACT and the NT includes their major water supply companies since at management unit level they are classified as part of the electricity industry.

The Census is conducted annually. The data are incorporated in the Economic Activity Survey as well as Australia's National Accounts.

Method of collection

Mail questionnaire.

Products and services available

Publications
  • Electricity, Gas, Water and Sewerage Operations, Australia (cat. no. 8226.0), alternates with
Electricity, Gas, Water and Sewerage Industries, Australia (cat. no. 8208.0), (Compendium issue)

Publications cat. no. 8226.0 and cat. no. 8208.0 are released on alternate years; 1998-99 data will be released in cat. no. 8226.0. The main difference between these publications has to do with the amount of data presented in each publication.

Data from the ABS Water and Sewerage Survey, and the ABS Electricity and Gas Survey, are published in both publications. Hence, this data is available annually. The cat. no. 8208.0 expands on the amount of data presented by including related data from other ABS and non-ABS sources. The aim is to provide a broader industry picture than the ABS Electricity, Gas, Water and Sewerage Surveys alone.
