SHORT-TERM VISITOR ARRIVALS TO AUSTRALIA, SEPTEMBER 2003 PRELIMINARY

The data presented in this release are preliminary and subject to revision. The ABS encourages users of this data to refer to the ABS monthly publication, Overseas Arrivals and Departures, Australia (cat. no. 3401.0) for final estimates. The release of the preliminary short-term visitor arrivals series will cease in December 2003 with the release of preliminary estimates for November 2003.

Trend estimate

Trend estimates have been revised to take into account the impact of recent world events. See paragraph 18 of the Explanatory Notes for more detail.

The preliminary trend estimate for September 2003 (422,900) is continuing the steady monthly increase in the series since April 2003.

Seasonally adjusted

From July 2003, concurrent seasonal adjustment replaced the foward factor method used to derive seasonally adjusted estimates. See paragraphs 12 to 15 of the Explanatory Notes for more detail.

The preliminary seasonally adjusted estimate of short-term visitor arrivals to Australia for September 2003 (428,800) represents an increase of 9% compared to the previous month and follows consistent monthly increases in the seasonally adjusted series since June 2003.

Original

The preliminary estimate for short-term visitor arrivals to Australia for September 2003 was 383,400. This represents an increase of 7% compared to September 2002 (358,600). Preliminary estimates suggest that large numbers of short-term visitors came from New Zealand (86,100 movements), Japan (51,400 movements) and the United Kingdom (42,500 movements). Compared to September 2002, visitors from New Zealand and the United Kingdom both increased by 7%, whereas Japan decreased by 3%.
