TREND ESTIMATES

  • The trend estimate for sheep slaughterings rose for the seventh consecutive month, to 932,600. Processors reported that extra stock were being off-loaded in drier areas including parts of south-western New South Wales and western Victoria. However, total slaughter numbers remain lower than previous years, reflecting the small size of the flock.
  • The trend estimate for mutton production rose for the eighth consecutive month, to 20,000 tonnes. Sheep meat production is starting to gain in significance once again with some processors reporting increased local and overseas demand for mutton.
  • The trend estimate for lamb slaughterings rose for the seventh consecutive month, to 1.4 million. Poor rainfall and declining feed reserves in some regions saw some producers off-load stock.
