ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION

This publication presents results from the quarterly Survey of Tourist Accommodation (STA). The scope of the STA includes hotels, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms.


For 2004 the STA includes the following categories of establishments which provide predominantly short-term non-residential accommodation to the general public:

  • licensed hotels and resorts with facilities and 15 or more rooms
  • motels, private hotels and guest houses with facilities and 15 or more rooms
  • serviced apartments with 15 or more units.


CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

Some changes have been made to the Glossary and data item labels in this publication as a result of implementing recommendations from an internal business process review of the STA. These recommendations serve to ensure the consistency of usage of data item descriptions between published output and the Glossary.

Accommodation takings

The trend estimate of the total accommodation takings for licensed hotels with facilities, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments combined increased by 6.3% to $1,426.5 million in September quarter 2004 compared with September quarter 2003.


The seasonally adjusted estimate of the total accommodation takings rose by 7.9% to $1,443.4 million from September quarter 2003 to September quarter 2004.

Room occupancy rate

The trend estimate of the room occupancy rate for licensed hotels with facilities, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments combined rose by 1.6 percentage points from 60.5% in September quarter 2003 to 62.1% in September quarter 2004.


The seasonally adjusted estimate of the room occupancy rate increased by 1.7 percentage points to 62.5% from September quarter 2003 to September quarter 2004.

Accommodation takings

In September quarter 2004, accommodation takings for licensed hotels with facilities, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments combined were $1,485.7 million. This was an increase of 8.2% ($112.2 million) from September quarter 2003. The average takings per room night occupied for licensed hotels with facilities, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments combined was $122.90.


Licensed hotels with facilities were the highest contributor to accommodation takings with $720.9 million (48.5%). Average takings per room night occupied in September quarter 2004 were highest for licensed hotels with facilities at $143.50.

The contributions of accommodation takings in September quarter 2004 for licensed hotels with facilities, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments combined were highest in New South Wales (32.7%) and Queensland (29.6%) and lowest in Tasmania (1.7%).


Room nights occupied

Total room nights occupied were 12.1 million in September quarter 2004 for licensed hotels with facilities, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments combined. Room nights occupied increased by 3.7% (0.4 million) from September quarter 2003 to September quarter 2004.


Licensed hotels with facilities represented 5.0 million (41.5%) of the total room nights occupied, while motels and guest houses represented 4.4 million (36.4%) and serviced apartments represented 2.7 million (22.1%).


Room occupancy rate

The room occupancy rate for licensed hotels with facilities, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments combined increased 1.7 percentage points to 64.2% in September quarter 2004 compared with September quarter 2003.


The Northern Territory recorded the highest room occupancy rate for licensed hotels with facilities, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments combined with 75.6%. This was followed by Queensland (72.6%) and the Australian Capital Territory (70.5%).
