New Motor Vehicle Sales, Total vehicles - Short term

APRIL KEY POINTS

SUSPENSION OF TREND ESTIMATES
  • Following the Commonwealth Budget in May 2009, the eligibility period for the Small Business and General Business Tax Break was extended to December 2009. The rebate level was also increased for small businesses, allowing eligible businesses to claim an increased tax deduction on the purchase of new motor vehicles.
  • The trend series attempts to measure the underlying behaviour in new motor vehicle sales. In the short term, this measurement may be significantly affected by unusual influences in the original and seasonally adjusted data, like those observed in May and June 2009. If the trend estimates in the publication were to be calculated without fully accounting for this irregular event, they would be likely to provide a misleading view of the underlying trend in new motor vehicle sales activity.
  • The new motor vehicle sales trend series has therefore been suspended from May 2009. The trend series will be reintroduced when more certainty emerges in the underlying behaviour of new car sales.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates can still be produced and will continue to be published as usual.
  • This publication shows the trend series to April 2009 and seasonally adjusted series to April 2010.

TOTAL NEW MOTOR VEHICLE SALES
  • Trend - See Suspension of trend estimates above.
  • Seasonally Adjusted - The April 2010 seasonally adjusted estimate for total sales of new motor vehicles (90 935) increased by 8.4% when compared to March 2010. The April 2010 seasonally adjusted estimate for total new motor vehicle sales increased by 28.7% when compared to the April 2009 estimate.

SALES BY TYPE OF VEHICLE
  • Trend - See Suspension of trend estimates above.
  • When comparing April 2010 with March 2010 sales of all vehicle types increased. Passenger vehicle sales increased by 7.8%, Sports utility vehicle sales increased by 16.1% and Other vehicle sales increased by 1.9%.
  • When comparing April 2010 to April 2009, sales of Sports utility vehicles increased by 46.5%, Passenger vehicle sales increased by 27.9% and Other vehicle sales increased by 14.0%.

SALES BY STATE
  • Trend - See Suspension of trend estimates above.
  • In seasonally adjusted terms, sales of new motor vehicles increased in seven of the eight states or territories for April 2010 compared to March 2010. Western Australia recorded the largest percentage increase, rising by 26.7%, followed by Victoria and South Australia, with increases of 8.0% and 6.5% respectively. Vehicle sales for Tasmania decreased by 2.5% over this period.
  • Vehicle sales in all states and territories increased when comparing April 2010 to April 2009. Western Australia and Victoria recorded the largest percentage increases of 47.0% and 39.4% respectively.
