MAY KEY POINTS

Livestock and meat production monthly trend movements for May 2016
  • Cattle slaughter remained steady in May but fell by 126,000 head (or 16 percent) from May 2015.
  • The number of calves slaughtered rose by 3,500 (or 7 percent) from April 2016.
  • Sheep slaughter fell by 11,000 head (or 2 percent) from April 2016 and by 56,000 head (or 8 percent) from May 2015.
  • Lamb slaughter fell slightly after reaching a 5-year peak in April 2016.
  • Pig slaughter continued its longer term pattern of steady growth.
