JANUARY KEY POINTS


ORIGINAL ESTIMATES
  • In original terms, the January 2012 merchandise imports were $19,198m, a decrease of $882m (4%) on the December 2011 merchandise imports of $20,080m.


PRELIMINARY BALANCE OF PAYMENTS GOODS IMPORTS
  • Preliminary analysis shows that goods debits (imports) on a balance of payments basis in original terms fell $995m (5%) between December 2011 and January 2012. In seasonally adjusted terms, goods debits fell $366m (2%) from $20,997m in December 2011 to $20,631m in January 2012. Intermediate and other merchandise goods fell $477m (5%), driven by the fuels and lubricants component, down $669m (18%) and capital goods fell $81m (1%). Consumption goods rose $164m (3%) and non-monetary gold rose $28m (6%).
  • The December quarter 2011 issue of Balance of Payments and International Investment Position, Australia (cat. no. 5302.0) and the January 2012 issue of International Trade in Goods and Services, Australia (cat. no. 5368.0) will include goods debits estimates that have been revised since the December 2011 issue of International Trade in Goods and Services, Australia which was released on 2 February 2012. These revisions reflect information recently obtained and impact the preliminary estimates of the goods debits volumes and implicit price deflator presented in the previous 5368.0 issue.
  • Preliminary analysis shows that, in seasonally adjusted terms, the goods debits volumes was revised from 1.9% to 1.3% and the implicit price deflator was revised from 3.2% to 3.5% during the December quarter 2011. In original terms, the Chain Laspeyres price index and implicit price deflator remained unchanged.


REVISIONS
  • Revisions have been made to the previous six months to incorporate the latest administrative data relating to international merchandise trade.
