MAY KEY POINTS


TOTAL NEW MOTOR VEHICLE SALES
  • Trend estimates: The May 2013 trend estimate (93 439) has decreased by 0.6% when compared with April 2013.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: The May 2013 seasonally adjusted estimate (93 209) has increased by 27 units when compared with April 2013.


SALES BY TYPE OF VEHICLE
  • Trend estimates: When comparing national trend estimates for May 2013 with April 2013, sales of Sports utility vehicles increased by 0.4%. Over the same period, Passenger and Other vehicles decreased by 0.7% and 1.6% respectively.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: When comparing seasonally adjusted estimates for May 2013 with April 2013, sales of Other vehicles increased by 3.5%. Over the same period, Passenger and Sports utility vehicles decreased by 1.3% and 0.1% respectively.


SALES BY STATE
  • Trend estimates: Five of the eight states and territories experienced a decrease for new motor vehicle sales when comparing May 2013 with April 2013. Western Australia recorded the largest percentage decrease (1.4%), followed by Queensland (1.3%) and South Australia (1.1%). Over the same period, sales in Tasmania and the Northern Territory increased by 1.1% and 0.3% respectively.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: Five of the eight states and territories experienced an increase in new motor vehicle sales when comparing May 2013 with April 2013. Tasmania recorded the largest percentage increase (7.0%), followed by the Northern Territory (5.6%) and the Australian Capital Territory (4.4%). Over the same period, sales in South Australia and Victoria decreased by 4.4% and 1.2% respectively.

DATA NOTES

The flooding which occurred in Thailand in from June 2011 may have had an impact on new vehicle sales in Australia due to associated delays in delivery of Thai manufactured vehicles and vehicle parts. The impacts from the flooding is no longer affecting the supply of new motor vehicles to Australia from Thailand.
