OCTOBER KEY POINTS


SHORT-TERM VISITOR ARRIVALS
  • Trend estimates: Short-term visitor arrivals to Australia during October 2008 (451,800 movements), decreased by 0.8% compared with September 2008 (455,300 movements). This followed monthly decreases of 0.9% for August 2008 and 0.8% for September 2008.
  • Currently, trend estimates for arrivals are 4.0% lower than in October 2007.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: During October 2008, arrivals (454,200 movements) increased by 0.9% compared with September 2008 (450,200 movements). This followed monthly decreases of 9.0% for August 2008 (associated with World Youth Day) and 0.8% for September 2008.
  • Original estimates: There were 456,000 arrivals to Australia in October 2008.


SHORT-TERM RESIDENT DEPARTURES
  • Trend estimates: Short-term resident departures from Australia during October 2008 (489,800 movements), recorded a 0.2% increase compared with September 2008 (488,600 movements). This followed monthly increases of 0.3% for August 2008 and September 2008.
  • Currently, trend estimates for departures are 4.5% higher than in October 2007.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: During October 2008, departures (491,700 movements) increased by 1.0% compared with September 2008 (487,00 movements). This followed a monthly increase of 2.6% for August 2008 and a monthly decrease of 1.4% for September 2008.
  • Original estimates: There were 458,000 departures from Australia during October 2008.
