APRIL KEY POINTS


TREND ESTIMATES
  • The provisional trend estimate of the balance on goods and services was a deficit of $1,104m in April 2007, a decrease of $6m on the revised deficit in March.
  • Goods and services credits fell $3m to $18,141m. Goods and services debits fell $8m to $19,246m.


SEASONALLY ADJUSTED ESTIMATES
  • In seasonally adjusted terms, the balance on goods and services was a deficit of $962m in April, a decrease of $666m on the revised deficit in March.
  • Goods and services credits rose $263m (1%) to $18,079m. Non-rural and other goods rose $301m (3%) while rural goods fell $58 (3%). Services credits rose $20m (1%).
  • Goods and services debits fell $403m (2%) to $19,041m. Capital goods fell $247m (7%), intermediate and other goods fell $145m (2%) and consumption goods fell $25m (1%). Services debits rose $15m.


ORIGINAL ESTIMATES
  • In original terms, the April 2007 balance on goods and services was a deficit of $389m, a decrease of $602m on the deficit in March. Goods and services credits fell $98m (1%) and goods and services debits fell $700m (4%).
  • In the ten months to April, exports of non-rural and other goods were up $14.4b (14%) and rural goods were up $0.3b (1%) on the corresponding period in 2005-06.

REVISIONS

Revisions were made to the merchandise trade series to incorporate the latest available data. There were no revisions to the balance of payments series in original terms. However, the seasonally adjusted and trend estimates have been revised due to the use of concurrent seasonal adjustment. (See Paragraph 8 in Explanatory Notes.)
