FEBRUARY KEY POINTS


TOTAL NEW MOTOR VEHICLE SALES
  • Trend - The February 2008 estimate for new motor vehicle sales (91 300) increased 0.4% when compared with January 2008. The trend estimate has been increasing for over 15 consecutive months. When compared to February 2007, the trend estimate increased by 6.6%.
  • Seasonally adjusted - The February 2008 estimate for total sales of new motor vehicles (89 623) decreased by 2.3% compared with January 2008.


SALES BY TYPE OF VEHICLE
  • Trend - All vehicle types recorded increases in trend estimates when comparing February 2008 to January 2008. Passenger vehicles and sports utility vehicles increased by 0.4% while other vehicles increased by 0.3%. When compared to the same period 12 months ago, sports utility vehicles, other vehicles and passenger vehicles rose 17.7%, 13.1% and 1.2% respectively.
  • Seasonally adjusted - When comparing February 2008 to January 2008, sports utility vehicles increased by 0.1% while passenger vehicles and other vehicles decreased by 3.5% and 1.1 respectively.


SALES BY STATE
  • Trend - When comparing February 2008 to January 2008, six states and territories showed increases in the trend estimate of total sales of new motor vehicles. The largest increases were in South Australia and the Northern Territory, both rising 1.3%, followed by Tasmania (1.0%). The Australian Capital Territory and Queensland decreased by 0.4% and 0.2% respectively.
  • Seasonally adjusted - When comparing February 2008 to January 2008, all states and territories showed decreases in total sales. The largest decrease was in South Australia (8.1%), followed by the Australian Capital Territory (4.7%) and Western Australia (4.0%). Victoria showed the smallest decrease (0.5%).
