DECEMBER KEY POINTS


TOTAL NEW MOTOR VEHICLE SALES
  • Trend estimates: The December 2014 trend estimate (92 618) has decreased by 0.1% when compared with November 2014. The trend estimate has now decreased by 0.1% for five consecutive months.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: The December 2014 seasonally adjusted estimate (94 903) has increased by 3.0% when compared with November 2014.


SALES BY TYPE OF VEHICLE
  • Trend estimates: When comparing national trend estimates for December 2014 with November 2014, sales of Sports utility and Other vehicles both increased by 0.5% respectively. Over the same period, Passenger vehicles decreased by 0.8%.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: When comparing seasonally adjusted estimates for December 2014 with November 2014, all vehicle categories recorded an increase in sales. Other vehicles recorded the largest increase (6.5%) while sales for Passenger and Sports utility vehicles increased by 2.8% and 1.2% respectively.


SALES BY STATE
  • Trend estimates: Five of the eight states and territories experienced a decrease in new motor vehicle sales when comparing December 2014 with November 2014. Western Australia recorded the largest percentage decrease (1.3%), followed by the Australian Capital Territory (1.2%) and South Australia (1.1%). Over the same period, both Victoria and the Northern Territory recorded the largest increase in sales of 0.3%.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: Five of the states and territories experienced an increase in new motor vehicle sales when comparing December 2014 with November 2014. Queensland recorded the largest percentage increase (12.8%) followed by the Northern Territory (5.3%) and New South Wales (1.5%). South Australia recorded the largest decrease in sales of 2.9%.
