New Motor Vehicle Sales, Total vehicles - Short term

SEPTEMBER KEY POINTS

SUSPENSION OF TREND ESTIMATES
  • Following the Federal Government Budget in May 2009, the eligibility period for the Small Business and General Business Tax Break was extended to December 2009. The rebate level was also increased for small businesses, allowing eligible businesses to claim an increased tax deduction on the purchase of new motor vehicles.
  • The trend series attempts to measure the underlying behaviour in new motor vehicle sales. In the short term, this measurement may be significantly affected by unusual influences in the original and seasonally adjusted data, like those observed in May and June 2009. If the trend estimates in the publication were to be calculated without fully accounting for this irregular event, they would be likely to provide a misleading view of the underlying trend in new motor vehicle sales activity.
  • The new motor vehicle sales trend series has therefore been suspended from May 2009. The trend series will be reintroduced when more certainty emerges in the underlying behaviour of new car sales.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates can still be produced and will continue to be published as usual.
  • This publication shows the trend series to April 2009 and seasonally adjusted series to September 2009.

TOTAL NEW MOTOR VEHICLE SALES
  • Trend - See Suspension of trend estimates above.
  • Seasonally adjusted - The September 2009 seasonally adjusted estimate for total sales of new motor vehicles (77 744) increased by 2.9% when compared to August 2009. The September 2009 seasonally adjusted estimate for total new motor vehicle sales is 2.0% lower than the September 2008 estimate.

SALES BY TYPE OF VEHICLE
  • Trend - See Suspension of trend estimates above.
  • Seasonally adjusted - All vehicle types increased in seasonally adjusted terms when comparing September 2009 with August 2009. Other vehicles increased by 7.3%, sports utility vehicles rose 2.6% and passenger vehicles rose 1.6%. When comparing September 2009 to September 2008, sports utility vehicles increased 2.8% while other vehicles and passenger vehicles dropped 7.4% and 1.6% respectively.

SALES BY STATE
  • Trend - See Suspension of trend estimates above.
  • Seasonally adjusted - Sales of new motor vehicles increased in six of the states or territories in seasonally adjusted terms for September 2009 compared to August 2009. Western Australia recorded the largest percentage increase, rising 5.0%, followed by Victoria and Queensland which rose 4.9% and 3.8% respectively. Tasmania and the Northern Territory decreased by 6.2% and 2.1% respectively over this period.
