DECEMBER KEY POINTS


TOTAL NEW MOTOR VEHICLE SALES
  • Trend estimates: The December 2012 trend estimate (97 931) has increased by 0.7% when compared with November 2012.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: The December 2012 seasonally adjusted estimate (98 264) increased by 2 105 units (2.2%) when compared with November 2012.


SALES BY TYPE OF VEHICLE
  • Trend estimates: When comparing national trend estimates for December 2012 with November 2012, sales of Passenger vehicles increased by 1.5%, while sales of Sports utility vehicles decreased by 0.3%. Over the same period Other vehicles sales recorded 0.0% growth.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: When comparing seasonally adjusted estimates for December 2012 with November 2012, sales of Passenger vehicles and Sports utility vehicles increased by 1.2% and 5.8% respectively. Other vehicles increased by 0.2% over the same period.


SALES BY STATE
  • Trend estimates: All of the eight states and territories experienced an increase for new motor vehicle sales when comparing December 2012 with November 2012. Western Australia recorded the largest percentage increase (1.4%), followed by Tasmania (1.3%) and then South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory both at 0.9%.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: Six of the eight states and territories experienced an increase in new motor vehicle sales when comparing December 2012 with November 2012. South Australia recorded the largest percentage increase (4.3%), followed by New South Wales (4.0%) and Victoria (1.9%). Over the same period Tasmania and the Northern Territory decreased by 12.1% and 2.2% respectively.

This issue presents details for the Sales of New Motor Vehicles for December 2012.


DATA NOTES

The flooding which occurred in Thailand in from June 2011 may have had an impact on new vehicle sales in Australia due to associated delays in delivery of Thai manufactured vehicles and vehicle parts. The impacts from the flooding is no longer affecting the supply of new motor vehicles to Australia from Thailand.
