MAY KEY POINTS


TREND ESTIMATE CAUTION
  • Caution should be used when interpreting recent trend estimates as they may be affected by unusual economic factors. For more details on trend estimates, please see paragraphs 11 and 12 of the explanatory notes.


TOTAL NEW MOTOR VEHICLE SALES
  • Trend - In May 2009, the first increase was recorded for total sales of new motor vehicles since the peak in January 2008. The May 2009 trend estimate for new motor vehicle sales (72 532) was 0.1% higher than the corresponding estimate for April 2009 and 17.1% lower than the trend estimate in May 2008.
  • Seasonally adjusted - The May 2009 seasonally adjusted estimate for total sales of new motor vehicles (75 472) increased by 5.4% compared with April 2009.


SALES BY TYPE OF VEHICLE
  • Trend - In May 2009 the trend estimate for new vehicle sales increased by 0.1% when compared with April 2009. Passenger vehicle sales decreased by 0.6%, while sales of sports utility vehicles increased by 1.4% and other vehicles increased by 0.9%. Compared with 12 months earlier, sales of total vehicles were 17.1% lower in May 2009. Sales of passenger vehicles decreased by 18.2%, other vehicles by 16.7% and sports utility vehicles by 14.3% when compared with the May 2008 level.
  • Seasonally adjusted - On a seasonally adjusted basis, May 2009 sales of all vehicles increased by 5.4% when compared with April 2009. During the same period other vehicles increased by 11.3%, sports utility vehicles by 6.4% and passenger vehicles by 2.9%.


SALES BY STATE
  • Trend - The Northern Territory, the Australian Capital Territory and Western Australia were the only states/territories to record a decrease in trend estimates when comparing May 2009 with April 2009. The Northern Territory showed the highest decrease with 1.0% followed by the Australian Capital Territory with 0.5% and Western Australia with 0.2%. An increase of 0.3% in the trend estimate was recorded in both Victoria and Tasmania. New South Wales and South Australia increased by 0.2% while Queensland showed no change.
  • Seasonally adjusted - All states except the Australian Capital Territory recorded seasonally adjusted sales in May 2009 above those in April 2009. Victoria had the highest increase of 9.6% while South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory increased by 7.5%, 5.5% and 4.5% respectively followed by New South Wales 4.0%, Queensland 3.5% and Western Australia 3.1%. The Australian Capital Territory was the only state to show a decline in seasonally adjusted sales with a decrease of 2.3% in May 2009 when compared with April 2009.
