JANUARY KEY POINTS


ORIGINAL ESTIMATES
  • In original terms, the January 2011 merchandise imports were $15,778m, a decrease of $2,388m (13%) on the December 2010 merchandise imports of $18,166m.


PRELIMINARY BALANCE OF PAYMENTS GOODS IMPORTS
  • Preliminary analysis shows that goods debits (imports) on a balance of payments basis in original terms decreased $2,381m (13%). In seasonally adjusted terms goods debits decreased $960m (5%) from $17,943m in December 2010 to $16,983m in January 2011. Intermediate and other merchandise goods fell $906m (11%) with the fuels and lubricants component down $754m (26%) after increasing by 17% the previous month; and the other merchandise goods component down $172m (71%). Non-monetary gold fell $102m (26%) and consumption goods fell $79m (1%). Capital goods rose $128m (3%).


IMPACT OF THE FLOODS
  • Extensive flooding began in late December 2010 in Queensland, and was more extensive in both Queensland and other states in January 2011. The collection and processing of data included in this publication were not disrupted.
